The Dark Tower shows off Idris Elba’s gunslinging skills, McConaughey’s all black attire, and more!

The Dark Tower is based off of Stephen King’s epic eight novel series. The first Dark Tower debuted in 1982, with the most recent entry coming out in 2012. The total number of pages for all books combined is a whopping 4,250. Fans of the novels have waited decades to see the long, adventurous story make it to the silver screen. Many other King novels have been adapted since including iconic films like Carrie, The Shining, and Misery. Another one of King’s legendary works It is coming out in September of 2017.

The Dark Tower novel has been adapted into a film starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. The film is directed by Nikolaj Arcel, who directed A Royal Affair, and who adapted the screenplays for the popular Swedish version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. It is slated for an August 2017 release.

The Dark Tower follows Roland Deschain aka The Gunslinger (Idris Elba) who lives in an Old Western world, one that is slowly dying as his people have “moved on”. There is the villainous The Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey) who wants to destroy worlds. The Dark Tower is a large tower where all different worlds meet. If the Man in Black is able to destroy the tower, it would mean all hell would break loose and worlds would be destroyed, including Earth. A young boy named Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor) lives in New York City and has visions of a gunslinger, a man in black, and a dark tower. He finds a portal to the different worlds and joins forces with The Gunslinger to unlock the various mysteries of the Dark Tower and to save the worlds.

It is unknown whether or not there will be any sequels to the film adaptation of The Dark Tower. Given that it is a series with over 4,200 pages, it would be nearly impossible to adapt the story in its entirety in one film. Also joining the cast are: Jackie Earle Haley, Dennis Haysbert, Abbey Lee, Katheryn Winnick, and Claudia Kim.

Sony Pictures released the first full length trailer for The Dark Tower, and it is mind blowing. Featuring incredible special effects and different parts of the world, the imagery shows stunning old Western landscapes, a shiny, bright Manhattan, and a large dark tower threatened to be destroyed. Stephen King himself approves of the trailer, tweeting, “The DARK TOWER trailer is here. And it’s awesome!”
