Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 remains strong, Snatched does well, and King Arthur tanks at the box office.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 remained number one, fighting off all new competition by a very, very long shot. Snatched, the raunchy comedy starring Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn, brought in good numbers considering its’ budget and reviews. Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword adaptation brought in very low numbers against a costly budget. Here’s a look at what happened over the weekend at the box office:
1st place is: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 with $63 million. The mega-hit has now made $246 million in just two weeks. The sequel to Marvel’s 2015 smash reunites Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Dave Bautista to play misfits in space who come together to battle evil. This time around, Kurt Russell joins the cast to play Ego, the father of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt). The film also features a soundtrack featuring monster 80’s hits.
2nd place is: Snatched debuting with $17.5 million. Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn star as mother and daughter in the R-rated raunchy comedy. Schumer struck gold in 2015 with Trainwreck, and this marks as Hawn’s first film in fifteen years. The mother and daughter duo go on a tropical vacation, only to be kidnapped, fighting their way out of their cell to freedom.
3rd place is: King Arthur: Legend of the Sword with $14.7 million. Guy Ritchie wrote and directed the film based on the legendary Sword in the Stone story that has found endless adaptations throughout the years. Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) stars in the titular role of Arthur, a street man who learns about his heritage to the throne, as he must conquer evil to do England justice. The opening numbers of $14 million were a disappointment, seeing as the large budget was made of $175 million.
4th place is: The Fate of the Furious with $5.3 million. The eighth installment has grossed $215 million. The mega popular franchise, which has grossed over $3 billion worldwide, features Charlize Theron as the film’s villain. Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Kurt Russell, and Michelle Rodriguez star in the sequel that finds Dom (Diesel) being seduced to an underworld of terrorism that poses as the biggest threat the crew has been a part of.
5th place is: The Boss Baby. Making $4.6 million, the film has now made $162 million. Disney’s animated comedy stars the voice of Alec Baldwin as a baby who dresses up in a suit to fight a bad CEO who is ruining Puppy Co. He teams up with his seven year old brother (Miles Christopher Bakshi) to take the evil empire down. The animated film also features the voices of Lisa Kudrow, Tobey Maguire, Jimmy Kimmel, and Steven Buscemi.
Rounding out the top ten are: in 6th place: Beauty and the Beast (Emma Watson) with $3.8 million, in 7th place: How to be a Latin Lover (Salma Hayek) with $3.7 million, in 8th place: Lowriders (Eva Longoria) with $2.4 million, in 9th place: The Circle (Tom Hanks) with $1.7 million, and in 10th place: Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (Prabhas) with $1.5 million.
