Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 debuts with $145 million, while Fate of the Furious remains strong!

While The Fate of the Furious has been number one for three weeks, nothing could stop Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 from knocking it off the number one slot. The sequel to Marvel’s blockbuster debuted with the second highest opening weekend of 2017 behind Beauty and the Beast, which is now the eighth highest grossing film of all time. Here’s a look at what happened over the weekend at the box office:

1st place is: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 with $145 million. The sequel to Marvel’s smash hit of 2015 reunites Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Dave Bautista to play misfits in space who come together to battle evil. This time around, Kurt Russell joins the cast to play Ego, the father of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt). The film also has a soundtrack featuring 80’s hits.

2nd place is: The Fate of the Furious with $8.5 million. The eighth installment has grossed $207 million in under a month. The mega popular franchise has now grossed over $3 billion worldwide. Charlize Theron joins the likes of Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Kurt Russell, and Michelle Rodriguez in the film that finds Dom (Diesel) being seduced to an underworld of terrorism that poses as the biggest threat the crew has been a part of.




3rd place is: The Boss Baby. Making $6 million, the film has now made $156 million. Disney’s animated comedy stars the voice of Alec Baldwin as a baby who dresses up in a suit to fight a bad CEO who is ruining Puppy Co. He teams up with his seven year old brother (Miles Christopher Bakshi) to take the evil empire down. The animated film also features the voices of Lisa Kudrow, Tobey Maguire, Jimmy Kimmel, and Steven Buscemi.

4th place is: How to be a Latin Lover with $5.2 million, bringing its two week total to $20 million. The hilarious comedy stars Eugenio Derbez as a man who has made a career of seducing rich older women. After being dumped, he moves his this sister played by Salma Hayek, who teaches him the value of family. The film received positive reviews and is directed by Ken Marino.

5th place is: Beauty and the Beast. Disney’s blockbuster brought in $4.9 million. The film has grossed $487 million in total, making it the eighth highest grossing film of all time. Emma Watson and Dan Stevens star in the live action adaptation of the beloved animated musical of 1991. The film also features the voices of Emma Thompson, Audra MacDonald, Ian McKellen, and Ewan McGregor.

Rounding out the top ten are: in 6th place: The Circle (Emma Watson, Tom Hanks) with $4 million, in 7th place: Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (Prabhas) with $3.2 million, in 8th place: Gifted (Chris Evans) with $2 million, in 9th place: Going in Style (Morgan Freeman, Ann-Margaret) with $1.9 million and in 10th place: Smurfs: The Lost Village with $1.8 million.
