“The cast and crew that was assembled was so top notch that I thought this could really stand to be high-quality and a lot of fun.” – Jake Gyllenhaal on Life
Life is the anticipated sci-fi thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds, Rebecca Ferguson, and Ariyon Bakare. Directed by Daniel Espinosa (Safe House, Child 44), the film follows an international space crew of six people discovering life on Mars. The organisms they find prove to be more intelligent and terrifying, and they grow incredibly faster than one could imagine. Life is written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the clever team who wrote the action-comedies Zombieland and Deadpool.
In Life, Jake Gyllenhaal plays astronaut David Jordan. Gyllenhaal spoke about playing his character, stating that for this movie his goal was “to have fun.” He further said, “I’ve played a lot of roles that have been incredibly serious, and this character is serious in a lot of ways, but the world is fun.” This time, he steps away from serious dramatic work like Brokeback Mountain and Prisoners, and steps into a world of sci-fi adventures on Mars.
Gyllenhaal is undoubtedly one of the hardest working actors in Hollywood today. From his dramatic physical transformations to his prolific body of work, he has such more to come. In addition to Life, Gyllenhaal has six films coming out in the next two years including Wildlife directed by Paul Dano, and The Man Who Made it Snow directed by Antoine Fuqua. He is producing four of those six films. He can also currently be seen on Broadway in Stephen Sondheim’s classic musical Sunday in the Park With George.
Film Inside’s reporter Rachel Kasuch sat down with Jake Gyllenhaal to discuss Life and how fun it was for him to not be in such a literal and serious world, but rather an adventurous and fun one. He talks about taking on new projects, whether or not he would like to go to Mars, and shared three fun facts, one of which is, “When somebody asks me my favorite color it legitimately panics me.” To see what other fun facts Gyllenhaal reveals, watch the exclusive interview here:
