“We all play with pirates because we are in a land where there is nothing to follow, only your instinct.” – Javier Bardem on Pirates of the Caribbean

Pirates of the Caribbean is releasing its fifth chapter of the blockbuster franchise called Dead Men Tell No Tales. The first film debuted in 2003, leading to three more films which have grossed over 3.7 billion worldwide. Johnny Depp landed an Oscar nomination for his performance of Jack Sparrow and the films have swept many awards. “It’s one of the longest and most successful franchises of the times so to be part of it is a great honor,” says Bardem about joining the series.

Oscar winner Javier Bardem joins the cast of Dead Men Tell No Tales to play the villainous Captain Salazar opposite Johnny Depp. The film follows Jack Sparrow being hunted down by the ghosts of evil sailors led by his nemesis Captain Salazar. His only hope is to find the Poseidon, and the only way to make that happen is to form an alliance with Henry (Brenton Thwaites), ensuing in a crazy adventure.

Javier Bardem and Johnny Depp worked together previously in 2000’s Before Night Falls. Bardem is no stranger to playing a villain, as his most famous roles have been playing an evil man with an agenda like No Country For Old Men and Skyfall. He will also appear in next years remake of Frankenstein playing the titular character. Bardem’s wife Penelope Cruz starred in the fourth movie On Stranger Tides in 2011.

Film Inside’s reporter Rachel Kasuch sat down with Javier Bardem to discuss joining the pirates, his inner villain, and why the idea of being a pirate is so interesting. “It’s about freedom, it’s about horizon, it’s about being left alone. There are no rules,” says Bardem. “It’s about doing anything you want, there is no law to follow.” To see more about what Bardem has to say, watch the exclusive video interview below.
