“I think just being able to meet Carrie, and just knowing her as a human and knowing how brave she was not only in her work but also in her presentation of who she is.” – Kelly Marie Tran on Carrie Fisher

It’s been just two years since The Force Awakens broke box office records to claim the number one spot of all time. In just a few days, Star Wars will most likely see another record shattered with the eagerly anticipated The Last Jedi. Most of the cast are returning, with many new fresh faces joining the series. Kelly Marie Tran joins the large cast as Rose Tico.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will start at the same scene that ended The Force Awakens. Remember, last years’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was a side chapter in the series and will not affect the plot of The Last Jedi. Rey (Daisy Ridley) meets Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) who teaches her about Jedi powers and The Force. They embark on a journey to unlock mysteries of the Force. They join Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), Finn (John Boyega), and Leia (Carrie Fisher). Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and his evil team threaten the heroic team along the way.

Kelly Marie Tran is a relatively new actress, Star Wars: The Last Jedi becoming her biggest role yet in a blossoming career. She starred in TV’s About A Boy, Ladies Like Us, and College Humor Originals. She also co-starred in last year’s film XOXO. Tran, who is Vietnamese, made headlines earlier in the year when she was on the cover of Vanity Fair, as she became the first Asian woman to grace the cover of the iconic magazine.

Film Inside’s reporter Rachel Kasuch met with Kelly Marie Tran to discuss making Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Tran talks about working with Carrie Fisher, keeping the film a secret, and joining the cast as a “newbie” to the series. “Being a newbie one thing that stood out is I didn’t feel like I was a newbie on that set,” admits Tran. “I felt like I was playing with my friends, I felt like I had been welcomed to this little club and that we were making a movie together… It felt like we were just having fun.” To see more of what Kelly Marie Tran has to say about Star Wars: The Last Jedi, watch the exclusive video interview below.
