“I saw Chris Pratt and his behavior and I went ‘Ok, I understand why I would be a good choice for his father.’” – Kurt Russell on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Kurt Russell joins the talented cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. In the first film, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is a rebel in the universe who grew up without knowing his dad. Russell steps in for the sequel to play Quill’s father, appropriately named Ego, who tracks down Peter. In the trailer, Peter asks Ego “Who are you?” to which Russell says, “I’m your Dad, Peter.”
Guardians of the Galaxy stepped out of the box of other Marvel movies, proving to be funny and heavily drenched in retro 80’s nostalgia. Kurt Russell himself is an 80’s action hero icon, whether it’s playing Jack Burton in Big Trouble in Little China or Snake Plissken in Escape From New York. It’s only fitting that Russell joins the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to play the main hero’s father.
Russell also stars in this year’s blockbuster The Fate of the Furious which just opened recently. It is unknown whether or not Ego will make an appearance in future Guardians of the Galaxy films, or any of the planned Avengers sequels.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 features returning cast members and new players including Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Rooker, and Chris Pratt.
Film Inside’s reporter Rachel Kasuch met with Kurt Russell to talk about what it was like to prepare for the role of Ego, and to film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Russell questioned why the director was interested in him, but was a huge fan after watching the first film. “The one thing I didn’t want to do is go into a franchise that people fell in love with and make one that people hate.” To watch more of Kurt Russell’s interview, watch the exclusive video below.
