Star Wars fans sign a petition on change.org to make Princess Leia an official Disney princess!

In the week’s following Carrie Fisher’s untimely death at just 60 years old, Star Wars fans around the world have been mourning the loss of the icon. A new petition was started on change.org to make Princess Leia an official Disney princess.

The official petition on change.org states: “After the tragic loss of Carrie Fisher, we feel that it is only fitting for Disney to do away with the rule that an official Disney princess must be animated and make Leia a full-fledged princess. This would be a wonderful way to remember Carrie and a welcoming to one of Disney’s new properties that is beloved by millions. What we are asking is that the Walt Disney Corporation hold a full ceremony inducting Leia as the newest Disney princess as well as a special service in memory of Carrie Fisher.”

So far, the petition has received 43,148 signatures out of the 50,000 goal. Disney owns Lucasfilm, and produced both The Force Awakens and Rogue One. Technically, Disney owns the rights to Princess Leia, which means they could make her an official princess to join the ranks of Cinderella, Jasmine, and Ariel.

This would mark the first time a Disney princess is a live person, not a cartoon. Not even Amy Adam’s role as Giselle in Enchanted is recognized as an official Disney princess.

Since Disney took over the Star Wars franchise, the new films have featured more prominently strong female characters played by actresses Daisy Ridley and Felicity Jones. One can only hope Princess Leia, the original and iconic badass female heroine of Star Wars, played to perfection by Carrie Fisher, will join the ranks of other princesses, being recognized as the strong, witty, clever Disney princess to be crowned an official.
