“I like to be active, I like to do stuff. I don’t like to sit around and do drama, no thank you.“ – Michelle Rodriguez on making action movies like The Fate of the Furious

The Fate of the Furious is the eighth installment of the mega-huge Fast and the Furious series. The iconic action packed franchise has grossed over $3 billion worldwide since it’s debut in 2001. The series began with leads Vin Diesel and the late Paul Walker leading the crew to fast paced car chases and anion-packed heists. Newcomers have joined the franchise in the sequels to follow, but one crew member reprises her role from the original, Michelle Rodriguez.

Rodriguez plays the outspoken, badass Letty. She was Dom’s love interest in the first film, and they got married in the last chapter Furious 7. In The Fate of the Furious, Letty and Dom are celebrating their honeymoon. Dom gets seduced in the underground world of terrorism by a mysterious woman (Charlize Theron). His new venture threatens to break apart the crew and Letty, as they are all faced with the ultimate threat.

Rodriguez is known for playing a strong, kickass, fighting woman in films such as Girlfight, Resident Evil, S.W.A.T., Avatar, Battle: Los Angeles, and Machete. “To entertain myself and do something I actually like; action movies are the number one thing,” she says. Rodriguez will also star in 2018’s Alita: Battle Angel directed by longtime collaborator Robert Rodriguez.

FilmInside’s reporter Rachel Kasuch sat down with Michelle Rodriguez to talk about strong female roles, Cuba, politics, and the making of The Fate and the Furious. On female roles in Hollywood, Rodriguez says, “I’m afraid of the staple common image of a woman written by a man to be projected to millions of people, I’m just tired of the same message.” With all of the strong roles under her belt, Rodriguez admits that the one thing that intimidates her is, “Politics”.
