It’s the battle between Vin Diesel’s return in XXX and thriller Split in this weekend at the box office!

XXX: The Return of Xander Cage is the third installment of the XXX series. Split is M. Night Shyamalan’s most anticipated film in a decade. Both films are opening this weekend, battling for the number one spot. XXX has the slight edge, being a sequel to a once popular franchise, and being a high action thriller versus Split’s dark, eery premise of three girls being held prisoner by a maniac with multiple personality disorder. Nevertheless, both films will be popular this weekend, and this could be a very close call, along with the already successful award winning films Hidden Figures and La La Land

1st place will be XXX: The Return of Xander Cage. The original XXX opened in 2002 and was a mega success, making $278 million worldwide. Vin Diesel was able to bring back the Fast and the Furious franchise in a very big way. XXX is opening in roughly 3,000 theaters and will be January’s first big special effects driven action movie. Toni Collette costars.

2nd place will be Split. M. Night Shyamalan, the director once dubbed “the next Spielberg”, has made a series of duds, but when 2014’s The Visit became a modest hit, it marked the director’s return to form. Split has been heavily promoted and looks scary as hell! Kevin (James McAvoy) is a man with twenty-three personalities who kidnaps three girls and holds them captive in his basement. They try to persuade the nice personalities to let them free before the twenty-fourth dubbed the “monster” takes over.

3rd place will be Hidden Figures. Last weekend, Hidden Figures was the number one movie of the weekend, beating out several new releases. The sensational film based on a true story follows three female mathematicians (Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monae, Octavia Spencer) who work at NASA and help put the first man in space. Kevin Costner and Kirsten Dunst costar in the hit drama that is receiving exceptional reviews and word of mouth.

4th place will be La La Land. Damien Chazelle (Whiplash) directed this lush, colorful musical that pays homage to the classics like Singing in the Rain and An American in Paris. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone star as aspiring artists in LA falling in love while chasing after their dreams. The film is accompanied by an original soundtrack that won the Golden Globe Award and is also number one on iTunes.

5th place will be Sing. The animated hit is the only real family friendly film for all ages and will still sell many tickets. The jukebox musical also has a blockbuster soundtrack to go along with it, featuring greatest hits from artists like Elton John, Aerosmith, and Nicki Minaj. Featuring the voices of Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon, the story follows a group of animals battling in a singing competition like American Idol.

Rounding out the top ten should find: 6th place: Star Wars sensation Rogue One 7th place: teen horror flick The Bye Bye Man 8th place: Boston Marathon bombing pic Patriot’s Day 9th place: Action thriller Sleepless, and in 10th place: sci-fi comedy Monster Trucks.
