“You shake his hand and it’s like it wraps around my hand twice.” – Zac Efron on The Rock & Baywatch
Baywatch premiered in 1989 on television. Starring David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson, the show followed the lives of a crew of overly beautiful lifeguards juggling the pressures of saving lives, looking tanned and flawless, batting the highs and lows of dating, and solving murderer mysteries. Part camp part serious, the show was a cult hit that spawned eleven seasons, countless merchandise, and several made for TV movies.
Fast forward to 2017 and an all new Baywatch has resurfaced. Dwayne The Rock Johnson steps into Hasselhoff’s shoes to play lead life guard Mitch Buchannon. The other lead lifeguards are Matt Brody (Zac Efron), Summer Quinn (Alexandra Daddario), and CJ Parker (Kelly Rohrbach). Buchannon has been a successful coach in the crowded beaches of LA, until he butts heads with Brody, a new recruit. The unlikely pair have to solve a criminal mystery that threatens the lives of the Baywatch crew.
The cast of Baywatch had to train vigorously to portray the super fit lifeguards. Daily exercise and strict diets were key to capture the six pack abs and cuts of the swimming models. “We had great trainers helping us. We ate pretty clean but I found I had to eat more, I had a bigger appetite because we were working out so much,” says Rohrback. “We knew we were making Baywatch.”
Zac Efron has become one of Hollywoods hottest actors after years of breaking away from the Disney mold that began his career. He also has The Greatest Showman and Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Vile & Evil coming out later this year. Alexandra Daddario, who worked with Dwayne The Rock Johnson in 2015’s San Andreas, will reprise her role in the sequel, as well as When We First Met and The Layover. Kelly Rohrbach has had several guest spots in hit shows like Broad City and Deadbeat, and last year landed a role in Woody Allen’s Cafe Society. Baywatch marks as her first major breakout role, gaining the coveted role of CJ originated by Pamela Anderson.
Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, and Kelly Rohrbach sat down with Film Inside to discuss abs, working out, saving lives, and more about Baywatch. “I think we all want to help people,” says Daddario on saving lives. “I think there are small things you can do that can change people’s lives that can be just as important as saving someone from drowning.” To see more about what Efron, Daddario, and Rohrbach have to say, watch the exclusive video interview for Baywatch below.
