It’s the epic battle between Rogue One and Finding Dory to be 2016’s number one film!
2016 was a huge year at the box office, bringing in a whopping $11.4 billion in total. Finding Dory swam to the top of the list, becoming the number one movie of the year (so far). Rogue One is slightly behind, becoming the number two film over the New Year’s Weekend. Industry predictions should find Rogue One claiming the number one spot as early as next week, knocking Finding Dory into the number two spot.
So far, Finding Dory crowned number one movie of 2016 with $486 million. When Finding Nemo came out in 2003, Ellen Degeneres’s voice as Dory stole the show. It’s no surprise Dory got her own movie, with Degeneres shining just as much as she did then. Finding Dory could easily find itself getting another sequel, joining the likes of Toy Story as being a Disney trilogy.
Rogue One shattered box office records and is still climbing high, coming for Finding Dory’s number one spot. The film has taken in a super galactic $424 million in just three weeks. Disney took a major risk telling a side story in a galaxy far, far away, and it paid off. The story follows a group of rebels who plan to steal the Death Star plans from Darth Vader. Starring Felicity Jones, Forrest Whitaker, and Diego Luna, the story takes place right before Episode IV: A New Hope.
Rogue One should have no problem bringing in at least $62 million in the next week to soar high into the galaxy as number one, with Finding Dory swimming slightly downstream to number two.
Overall, Disney has had an exceptional year, with Rogue One and Finding Dory sitting proudly in the top two slots, making a combined total of $910 million and counting!
