“Jessica’s skin is softer but that’s it, everything else is hard.” – Mike Colter on Jessica Jones in Marvel’s The Defenders
Marvel’s latest series The Defenders comes out on Netflix August 18th. In a similar fashion to The Avengers, The Defenders teams up four Marvel superheroes to form a team of four in Hell’s Kitchen, NY. Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Mike Colter as Luke Cage, Charlie Cox as Daredevil, and Finn Jones as Iron Fist make up The Defenders, with each character being a loner.
The last time we saw Jessica Jones, she had finally killed the evil Kilgrave, but don’t expect to see a softer side to Jones. “Just because that person doesn’t exist, the damage and the trauma that she carries around in the world doesn’t go away,” says Ritter on Jones. The last time we saw Luke Cage he was being hauled off to prison, but he won’t be there at the beginning of The Defenders. “He’s out, done. Finally! The orange suit is gone,” says Colter on Cage.
Also joining the cast of The Defenders are: Rosario Dawson, Wai Ching Ho, Elodie Young, Jessica Henwick, and Sigourney Weaver as the villainous Alexandra. “She’s a tall glass of water,” says Colter on Weaver’s villain. The series is eight episodes long and will coincide with the four shows already on Netflix. In addition to Luke Cage and The Defenders, Mike Colter can be seen in the smash hit comedy Girl’s Trip in theaters now. On top of Jessica Jones and The Defenders, Krysten Ritter will star in the new drama Fuddy Meers.
FilmInside’s reporter David Bruce met with Krysten Ritter and Mike Colter to discuss the Marvel universe, what it was like working as a team, saving the world, and more. “The Defenders come together kind of reluctantly. These are all super loner characters with the exception of Iron Fist,” says Ritter. “But these are characters who come together because at the end of the day they have a moral responsibility. They’re powered people and can help so when put to the test they will.” To see more about what Ritter and Colter have to say about The Defenders and super powers, watch the exclusive interview below.
The Defenders premieres on Netflix on August 18, 2017.
